Legend of Zelda Link Costume Part 2

In September, I shared my intent on making a Link costume for my six-year-old son. You can read the post by clicking here.

This is what the final product looked like:

The belt straps were fashioned from this pleather-like material from JoAnn Fabrics. The gold buckles were actually a brighter gold, but I sprayed it with dark gold spray paint with a light shimmer to give it that “older” look.

As you can see from the image on the right, the boots aren’t like Link’s. They are, in fact, Columbia brand boots that I picked up online because I didn’t have time to construct a good boot cover. Plus, I admit: I was feeling a bit lazy at this point because I had spent sooo much time making the tunic and belts that I wanted to be done with the project ;)

Initially, I started this project sewing the cap and belt by hand, but after it literally took me four hours to sew one side of the belt, I seriously considered buying a sewing machine. Luckily, my good friend, Erica’s, mom had a sewing machine on hand so I borrowed it to do the rest of the sewing. Wow – what a HUGE time saver!

All in all, I consider this year’s costume a success. The shield could have been constructed better, but, given the amount of time we had to work on it, I think it still came out pretty decent.

Now, off to next year’s Halloween costume… Dark Link perhaps? Or, for the sake of simplicity, how about Toon Link? ;)
