TOMS Vegan Wrap Boots

TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie was on a trip in Argentina when he noticed a lot of children not wearing any shoes. He decided to help by creating TOMS, a shoe company that would match and give away every pair of shoes sold. His movement is called “One For One”, and he has helped to make a positive difference in the world of these children. Being barefoot can lead to the infection of soil-transmitted disease, and shoes are a requirement to attend class. Without shoes, these children are susceptible to disease and cuts, and they cannot even go to school.

TOMS acts the middle man part: you buy a pair, and, at no additional cost to you, they give a pair to a child who needs shoes. It’s a win-win situation, and shopping for casual yet trendy slip-ons has never felt better ;)

Although not a purely veg-friendly company, TOMS does offer a good variety of vegan shoes, particularly the wrap boot in the photo at left.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn Review

Our gaming era is rampant with first-person shooters and the proliferate usage of the word “n00b” when your character doesn’t fit a certain criteria set forth by the same people who were once “n00bs” themselves, and it sometimes is refreshing to play a game that isn’t all about going into a military barracks covert for complete enemy annihilation.

As cheesy as this may sound, Nintendo does know how to make games that are good for the entire family. For the times when you need to get away and just play a simple platform game that takes you back to your childhood, pick up Kirby’s Epic Yarn on the Nintendo Wii. Set in a place called Patch Land, this game features the pink puffball, Kirby, and Prince Fluff, as they attempt to solve the mystery of the Caped Sorcerer who turns people into – oh, no – yarn!

The game is very polished and… well, cute! Enemies are also made of yarn and buttons, and as they are defeated by our two heroes, the enemies’ yarn bodies simply unravel and appear to disintegrate. As Kirby and Prince Fluff traverse the different lands, which include space, water, and treat (candy & sweets) themes, they transform into different creatures and gizmos, such as a UFO and even a dolphin.

The gameplay is straightforward and simple. You hop around, neutralize foes, turn into a car to gain speed, turn into a parachute to descend slowly, and utilize your environment to get ahead in the game. This is super kid-friendly, fun, and good for a great laugh with another person, as it features local co-op. The music, albeit simple, is perfect for the game. Featuring piano rifts and quirky melodies, the soundtrack to this game has now been inducted into my all-time favorite soundtracks, alongside Final Fantasy soundtracks ^.^ The track featured in the Lava Landing stage is my favorite! Scroll to the bottom of this post for the video.

Keeping in mind that each game is based on genre and other specifics and are rated accordingly, I give this game a 9/10.

Angels on Bare Skin by LUSH

Reminiscent of a puff pastry or even a decaying piece of sushi sans seaweed, Angels on Bare Skin by LUSH may look a little gross in the photo, but this stuff is awesome. Picked some up at the LUSH in Emeryville some time ago, and it made my skin feel very smooth and moisturized. Be warned: it does not help very much with removing make-up. If you need to remove some eyeliner or eyeshadow, using this will cause it to smear. I’d suggest using another cleanser prior and then finishing off your facial regimen with this to leave skin feeling soft and refreshed. Depending on your current skin condition, you may not even need a moisturizer after.
